I always get excited when Pantone releases their fashion color reports. These color-splot lists feature the shades top fashion designers are using on the runways for any given season. Spring 2011's report has an "exotic journey" theme, with the designers citing their color influences as anywhere from New Wave French electronica (Honeysuckle) to Peruvian textiles (Regatta) to a 1950s garden party (Lavender). The great thing for us jewelry designers is that these reports can give us a leg up on one area of design that many of us struggle with: color. Why not rely on the pros to help us be fashion forward?

TECHknitting™: Circular swatches knit flat (back and forth on two needles)

Here are a couple of tricks to make swatching circular knitting easier. No longer do you have to make a hat to test your gauge for that new seamless sweater, or knit half a sock before discovering you're really making a mitten for your favorite kid. Today's little tricks let you test your CIRCULAR gauge on a piece of FLAT knitting. One of these tricks has been shown on TECHknitting blog before, although rather hidden, but the other trick is making a first appearance here.

Saving the sheep, one fleece at a time - Amy's Blog - Spin-Off

Over ten years ago, Spin-Off ran a series of articles about rare breeds of sheep and their wool and then hosted a contest called, "Save the Sheep."  The contest was so overwhelmingly well-received by the Spin-Off readers that we had to rent office space to look at all the entries and then jury them for the traveling exhibit.

The results of the contest were also published in a book (now out-of-print) edited by Deb Robson, Handspun Treasures from Rare Wools: Collected Works from the Save the Sheep Exhibit. Deb was the editor of Spin-Off in those days, and I was the assistant editor.

Can you make a handspun hat in an hour? - Amy's Blog - Spin-Off

Pat Maley and I were Team Trouble at this contest. We won "Most Creative" and co-won "People's Choice." That's me on the left with the hat we made in an hour.

Spin-Off Autumn Retreat 2010 happened. It took place October 24–30 at the beautiful Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, Wisconsin, while autumn leaves carpeted the grass, flocks of geese bobbed on the misty surface of the lake, and gray squirrels squirreled away nuts, taking little note of the spinners gathering—arms laden with spinning wheels and bags bulging with soft, riotously dyed fibers. Some arrived slightly anxiously because they didn’t know a soul, while others arrived eager to meet up with friends met at previous SOARs. All left with hearts full of new friendships as well as heads and hands that had acquired new skills. Quick videos were shot of how to separate a dual-coated fleece; locks of fiber were exchanged; and lace shawls, finished the night before, were donned, paraded, and sincerely admired. So much happened during the week that it is hard to sum up—but I will attempt to describe the final act.
