Review: Flip Tips

The Flip video camera is one of the hottest items on the market. Small, easy to use, and inexpensive, the Flip produces very good quality videos in an easy to carry camera.

Cindy Shebly has been on the Flip bandwagon from the beginning, and along with Dany Byrne she has produced Flip Tips, a video lesson on how to use for and care for your Flip, as well as how to edit movies in Windows Movie Maker.

A full one hour class is included on this Flash encoded video CD ROM. A simple to use, indexed menu makes navigation easy. You can start, stop, skip ahead, or re-run a section without losing your place.

Potential purchasers should know that this CD will only run on a Windows-based computer, and the software editing portion of the instruction only covers Windows Movie Maker. Therefore, if you own a Mac, I can't recommend this CD. You can run the CD on your Mac vis Parallels or other emulator, but the information about Movie Maker won't be of any help to the Mac user. Ideally, I'd love to see this CD in a Mac version, using iMovie as the editing tool that is demonstrated.

That said, if you own a Windows-based computer and a Flip video camera, I'd recommend this CD. The use and care instructions are good, and the editing instruction will help the beginner get their movies whipped into shape in no time The explanations are clear and easy to understand. And if you want to use your Flip to make movies to upload to You Tube, the settings information for You Tube included is invaluable.

Winter Sport Socks 2.5

Once you have finished the heel flap, it is turn to turn the heel. Here's how:

1. Knit center heel flap stitch, then knit two stitches past this stitch, SSK, k1, turn.

2. Sl1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn

3. Sl 1, knit to within 1 stitch away from the gap, ssk, k1, turn.

4. Sl 1, purl to within 1 stitch away from the gap, p2tog, p1, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4. On the lasr two rows you wlll have enough stitches to work the decreases but not the k1 or p1 that follows.

After you have turned the heel, you will have 19 stitches in one needle.

Book Review: The Creative Entrepreneur

The Creative Entrepreneur is an innovative, visual method of business development for all creative types who want to turn their passions into viable business opportunities.

The Creative Entrepreneur takes readers on an inner journey of creative exploration to discover how to make their dreams of creative livelihood real, as they craft their own Creative Entrepreneur Journal.

I'm a pretty pragmatic person, not a real touchy-feely artist so I approached this book with a bit of skepticism. Five minutes into the book I threw out my preconceived notions of what this book would be and got into the exercises.

The author, Lisa Sonora Beam, obviously knows how creative types think and also knows business. She has developed a unique method for us creative types to put both halves of our brain together...the left side, practical side, and the right side, creative side, in order to build a highly successful business.

I highly recommend this book. Not only is it visually pleasing, it is full of practical, down-to-earth information that will help you grow your creative business in the way you want it to move.

Full of sidebars, visuals, case studies and strategies, this is one of the best business books for creative individuals I have read in a long time.

Winter Sports Socks 2.4

Now it is time to turn the heel on the socks.

You should have ended on an even numbered row; in my case this is row 144. Work across the front (instep) sock in pattern. Then begin heel flap on needles 2 and 3 (I consolidate these stitches on one needle after a few rows).

Heel flap Row 1: K2, sl 1 across heel flap, ending knit 2. Turn.

Row 2 and all even numbered rows: purl across.

Row 3 and all odd numbered rows: sl 1, ki across heel flap, ending sl1.

Continue in this manner until you have completed 32 rows, ready to begin a right side row.

Joan & Clive Jones (of Woodland Turnery) and James & Anne Williamson are pleased to announce that following negotiations it has been agreed that in an initial partnership production of Timbertops Spinning Wheels will be resumed.

The new home of the Timbertops will be Woodland Turnery of Pontypool (South Wales) with James & Anne Williamson retaining an advisory and supervisory capacity to ensure that the quality of ‘Timbertops’ is upheld as closely as possible.

Woodland Turnery have been making spinning wheels since 1995 and spinning and weaving accessories since 2001 in locally grown Welsh Timber. Also repairs & renovations of spinning wheels and the supply of replacement bobbins have been undertaken since late 2006/early 2007.

Initially Timbertops production will start with the Leicester and Thurmaston 21 spinning wheels with the first ones being available in early 2009. As time progresses it is hoped to bring into production many of the wheels that James and Anne made so famous.
